Athlete of the Week: BG’s Wright nets 100th in win

Bishop Guertin's Julia Wright scored her 100th career goal in a win over St. Thomas.

Julia Wright didn’t know the importance of the goal right away.

The Bishop Guertin High School senior scored five goals in the girls lacrosse team’s win over St. Thomas Aquinas last week, and it wasn’t until she received a text message from her dad that she knew of the personal milestone she’d reached.

“I texted my Dad to tell him I had five goals in the game,” Wright said. “He was like ‘That fifth goal was your 100th’ Cool. It was kind of anticlimactic, but it’s a big accomplishment to get there.”

Wright had to replay each goal in her mind, trying to remember which one had been the final goal she had that afternoon.

“I was thinking back and trying to remember which one it was,” she said. “We were running a play. I was posted in the middle. I had one girl on my shoulder. I got the ball and turned, and I think I hit the upper right-hand corner on that one.”

Those five, along with five more in a win over Merrimack, gave Wright 12 in three games last week. For her efforts, Wright was selected as nh-highschoolsports.com’s Athlete of the Week.

“That’s pretty good,” BG coach Ron Cote said. “I don’t have too many at 100. Kristi Purington hit 100 last year and Julia did this year. I may have one, possibly two more before the end of the year. That’s a pretty big accomplishment.”

As a senior, Wright has adjusted well to the role of being one of the players that’s called upon to be a leader in whatever way she can.

“There were always players that I looked up to, so I try to be the best I can on and off the field,” she said.

“My returning players are really good about coaching the younger kids and making sure they know what they’re doing,” Cote added.

The Cardinals haven’t missed a beat after advancing to the Division II championship game for the first last season. In their six wins, the Cards have scored 111 goals this season, getting 19 or more 20 on four occasions.

Perhaps what’s allowed them to be so successful is that there isn’t one person other teams can key on to stop BG’s offense.

“The thing with our team, we’re not just a couple of players,” Wright said. “Everyone is good. Our passing has been really great this season and we use everyone. If you look at the scores, it’s everyone scoring.”

And coming off a title game appearance, the Cardinals are anxious to take the next step this season, which is something they’ve been able to do every year.

“We’ve had our best season every year,” Wright said. “We’ve never taken a step back. The last thing left is … all the way.”
