The last of the Class L undefeateds is no more.
The Merrimack High School boys basketball team fell on the road to Salem, which has become a giant killer as of late. The one-point win over the Tomahawks marks the second straight Tuesday that the Blue Devils have taken out a team that was previously undefeated; Salem also handed Bishop Guertin its first loss, also by one point.
After Merrimack defeated BG last Friday, coach Tim Goodridge was cautious when talking about his team’s undefeated status, and with good reason.
While the Tomahawks – who were 4-14 in Class L a year ago – were the only unbeaten team through eight games, by no means are they the class of the class.
Merrimack does have double-digit wins over the likes of Manchester West, Manchester Central and Nashua North, but the Tomahawks also beat Spaulding by five, BG by three and Exeter by three.
Friday will be another test for Merrimack, as it hosts Alvirne before heading to Keene on Feb. 9.
