The field hockey teams from Hollis/Brookline High School and Con-Val of Peterborough played nearly 75 minutes without a goal Tuesday night before the Cavaliers ended the game in overtime to win 1-0 in Division II action.
Kirstin Bergen scored after 74:43 of play and Bridgett Sullivan made 14 saves in goal to lead H/B to a win that almost wasn’t.
The game started at 7 p.m. underneath the lights on Con-Val’s football field, and with 1:41 left in overtime – and at 8:45 p.m. real time – H/B coach Tim Glover called a timeout. At the same time, the lights on the field – which were on a timer – went out. Instead of a few moments to catch their breath, both teams had a half hour as the lights were turned back on.
When played resumed, the ball was at the top of the scoring circle, where Con-Val had committed a foul, and Caitlin Sweeney pushed it toward the front of the goal. Bergen was able to get the ball out of the scrum in put it in the goal.
H/B returns to action on Friday, when it hosts Bow.
