A different perspective on the world of sports

Welcome, welcome, welcome

Thank you very much for stopping by the first installment of a brand new sports blog that I hope you will find entertaining enough to return to often.

My guess is that you stumbled upon this rambling by way of nh-highschoolsports.com. If so, thank you for checking out that site as well. While the two are connected, their subject matter will differ in a few ways.

Here you will find more of my opinions – The Madness, if you will – in a less formal way and on various sports topics beyond the realm of New Hampshire high schools. I like to think that my career – over nine years as a sports reporter and a lifetime of being a fan – will help me provide you with a wide range of topics, no matter what your interests are.

First, I’d like to start out with a story. Those of you who followed one of my previous blogs, which started a little more than a year ago, might remember that I like to do that from time to time.

This story is about how I started down the path toward a career in sports journalism. I entered my first semester at the University of Pittsburgh in the fall of 2000. The day before classes started, I was attending a student activities fair with a friend.

While this friend looked at every booth and grabbed a flier or signed up for something at just about every one, I followed along for the ride, not taking much interest in any of what was going on around me.

Finally, when we were nearing the end, this friend turned to me and said, “Why haven’t you signed up for anything yet?”

I shrugged and began looking around, feeling that I needed to find something. And then my eyes landed on the booth for the student newspaper, The Pitt News.

Having never even dreamed of being a reporter, but with a passion for photography almost equal that of writing, I signed up to take photos for the paper.

Oh, and I also happened to check off that I might be interested in writing about sports.

The following day, the sports editor called and asked if I’d be interested in showing up for the sports staff meeting that afternoon. Long story short, by the time I was a senior, I was the sports editor.

To this day, I’m still waiting to hear back about taking pictures.

Sometimes, the smallest things turn out to make the biggest difference. I never planned to fall in love with sports journalism, but my hope is, you’ll fall in love with what I’m doing.
