The Steroid Legacy, or why no one will ever be able to have a breakout year without suspicion again

Before the 2010 season, Jose Bautista was known for being a part of the most hilarious Rule 5 draft in Major League history.

Not anymore. As of Aug. 24, Bautista is just 10 home runs away from the most unlikely 50-home run season since Brady Anderson.

A player destined to be remembered only as a utility guy has turned into an All-Star, power-hitting third baseman on the verge of reaching a home run total that was all but impossible to achieve just a quarter century ago.

And the one question you have to ask is, what’s this guy on? Of course, as of now, there’s no  proof Bautista is on anything more than Gatorade and Power Bars. But you still have to wonder, right?

We can thank The Steroid Era for that cynicism. Maybe if that had existed when Anderson was turning in his career year, things would be different.

Damon heading back to Boston?

Earlier Monday, there were reports that Detroit Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon had been placed on waivers and claimed by an unidentified team.

Now, Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated is saying it was the Red Sox who claimed Damon. However, Damon has eight teams to which he can be assigned, and Boston is not one of them.

The Biggest Night in Sports, or so ESPN says

The night after the MLB All-Star game is the quietest night in sports.

Unless you’re ESPN.

The Morning Roundup: When 28 outs isn’t enough

There was plenty going on in the sports world on Wednesday, from Serena Williams losing in the French Open, to Ken Griffey, Jr., calling it quits, to the Flyers winning Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals in overtime.

But the one thing everyone will be talking about in the days and weeks to come is Armando Galarraga. Or worse yet, Jim Joyce.

Breathe easy, Red Sox fans

Dustin Pedroia was shooting another Dunkin Donuts commercial on Wednesday.

Oh, and he had X-rays taken on his left wrist, which he landed on awkwardly during Tuesday’s game against the Twins. Relax, the X-rays were negative.

Return from hiding

OK, that’s not true. I haven’t been hiding for the last 10 days or so. I’d like to say I was busy with huge, important projects that left me with little time, but that’s not true.

I can’t even say I’ve been busy watching the Olympics, because that’s not true either. Outside of catching glimpses of the Opening Ceremony, I didn’t watch a minute. Does that make me un-American? Maybe. Did I care? Nope. Did I miss out? You tell me.

Wait, you mean there’s football on right now?

Well, actually not right now, but later tonight (and I had to look this up) is the NFL’s Pro Bowl.

See, we’re all supposed to care about this now because it’s happening before the Super Bowl, which means the season isn’t over yet and all of the superstar players chosen to play will be there.
